Description et objectifs

Religion and the Body

The second semester will be organized around an exploration of the relationship between religion and the body in the United States. We will look at the ways in which the body is imagined and deployed in religious practices and beliefs. We will seek to highlight religion’s role in constructing and shaping the believers’ bodies, and the contribution of new understandings of the body to the evolution of religion.
In particular, we will address the representation of the divine in art, issues of sexuality and gender, as well as the relationship between religion and the Covid-19 pandemic.
